Aspida: When you make a defense roll, that roll gains +1. When you make a defense roll against a weapon attack, if you have an ally in play or in your discard pile, the roll gains +2.
"Skutos" means "hides". The Byzantine large oval shields were made from animal skins and were the staple of the infantry. The Byzantine infantry, known as Skoutatoi derived their name from their shield.
