The word "jihad" derives from the Arabic root "jhd" meaning "to strive to the utmost". In the Sufi tradition, Jihad al-Akbar is the greater jihad, and is the spiritual struggle against one's inner self (nafs) and desires (hawa). Jihad al-Asgar is the lesser jihad. It is external and refers to physical effort, including war.
